Frankincense in Skincare: What the Science Says

Frankincense has been applied to skin for as long as it’s been burned as incense. In traditional practice across the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and Ayurvedic medicine, frankincense resin and its oil were used to soothe, tone, and protect skin. But in recent decades, researchers have started looking at why.

Boswellic Acids

The active compounds in frankincense resin are boswellic acids — a group of triterpenic acids unique to the Boswellia genus. Research has shown that boswellic acids have notable anti-inflammatory properties. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine found that Boswellia extracts reduced inflammatory markers in skin cells, supporting its traditional use in calming irritated or stressed skin.

Skin Tone and Texture

Frankincense oil is widely used in aromatherapy and natural skincare for its perceived effects on skin tone and elasticity. While large-scale clinical trials are limited, smaller studies and extensive anecdotal evidence suggest that regular application of diluted frankincense oil can improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and support skin’s natural renewal process.

Antioxidant Properties

Research published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies has documented the antioxidant capacity of Boswellia Carterii essential oil. Antioxidants help protect skin cells from oxidative stress caused by environmental factors like UV exposure and pollution — a key factor in premature skin aging.

Our Approach

We don’t make medical claims about our products. What we do is use Grade I Boswellia Carterii frankincense oil — the same species studied in research — as the anchor ingredient in our skincare line. Our Eye Roller and Massage Oil pair it with carrier oils like jojoba, rosehip, and sweet almond that are well-established in skincare for their moisturizing and nourishing properties.

The science is catching up to what traditional practitioners have known for centuries. And we think that’s worth paying attention to.
